What is SAS?

SAS is a software package developed by the SAS Institute. The package has a variety of uses including managing, manipulating, analyzing, and summarizing data1. There are many other popular software packages for data management and statistical analysis, including R, Stata, and SPSS, but at CNODES we use SAS. SAS Institute is one of the oldest and most established companies in this field. As such, they have a large support team, extensive documentation, and a large and active online community. 

There have been many different SAS versions and interfaces over the years. The three SAS interfaces currently available are:

  1. SAS Microsoft Windows Environment,
  2. SAS Enterprise Guide, and
  3. SAS Studio2

As we mentioned in the introduction to this module, our focus is on the SAS Microsoft Windows Environment. We understand that some CNODES sites use SAS Enterprise Guide and SAS Studio. We have included links to resources at the end of this module that may help you to understand some of the nuances between these systems. In this module we will cover SAS version 9.4.
